The "KISS" principle
The biggest advice I can give you in designing a website is the "KISS" principle: Keep it Simple Stupid. There is so much a person can do online these days to create a fancy website. It is possible to spend thousands of dollars, just on a flashy introduction. If you look at the most successful websites,
though, they are quite simple. Google & Facebook have some fancy options, but their core and introduction pages are very basic.
Maneuverability
Make it easy for people to find what they are looking for. Don't you hate it when you get lost in a website & don't even know if you are on the same site or not? Don't give your visitors those same frustrations. Keep your navigation simple and easy to use. Look at this website or www.BuySoapNuts.com. They both have a navigation menu on the left hand side & links to all the pages on the bottom. Nice and easy to use. I'm not saying to create websites just like mine. Be yourself. Be creative. Just keep the site simple and maneuverable & your visitors will love you for it.
